Orex SAI has this week announced plans to pair with Philippines telco Globe Telecom to trial Open RAN technologies.
The pair will prepare for an upcoming field trial as part of the agreement.
Orex SAI, said it will first pair with Globe to conduct an Open RAN demonstration experiment ahead of the field trial.
The goal of open RAN networks is to mix and match vendors and technology providers to diversify supply chain security, promote competition, and drive cost efficiencies.
Orex Sai is a JV set up by Japan's NTT Docomo and NEC with the aim of deploying Open RAN services. According to Orex Sai, the venture aims to accelerate the global expansion of the Open RAN business by locally sourcing products and services from some of its partners.
As part of the demonstration experiment, Globe will assess the feasibility and performance of Open RAN solutions and analyze the role that the technology could potentially play in its future network development.
“The need for connectivity has been constantly increasing as the digital shift accelerates, fueling customer demand. As an innovation leader, Globe is taking this key step forward in exploring the potential of Open RAN, which is now in use in other tech-forward countries,” said Joel Agustin, Globe’s head of service planning and engineering.
"By leveraging Open RAN technology, we aim to contribute further to the innovation and success of Globe Telecom by delivering flexible, scalable, and cost-effective connectivity solutions to meet the evolving needs of people and communities," added Sadayuki Abeta, chief technology officer at Orex Sai and chief Open RAN strategist at NTT Docomo.
Orex SAI also announced this week that it has entered into a strategic partnership with HPE to provide zero-touch lifecycle automation in multi-vendor Open RAN environment.
The tie-up will see HPE integrate its RAN automation plus the OREX service management and orchestration platform in a multi-vendor environment.
Orex also penned a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Singapore's StarHub Limited (StarHub) to jointly deploy commercial Open RAN solutions for StarHub’s Cloud Infinity and 4G/5G macro network.
